Department of Forensic Medicine situated at level V of the College Building deals with medical aspects of law as well as legal aspects of medical practice. Mortuary, housed in the L-block of the hospital, comprises of adequate space with modern facilities for conducting postmortems.

SERVICES

The Department conducted 288 medico legal autopsies during year 2003

'Embalming' of dead bodies as and when required, is being conducted in mortuary

The department also provides expert consultation to the Emergency Wing of GMCH and GH Sector 16 in complicated medicolegal cases referred to it by Director Health Services Chandigarh Administration  

Expert opinion is being extended to various investigating agencies of UT, Chandigarh, Punjab & Haryana 

The faculty of the department has  been delivering the lectures to the trainees as well as officers of investigating agencies deputed from other states at the Central Detectives Training School Sector 36, Chandigarh.         

TEACHING

The department has been rendering services in the form of teaching to 50 MBBS students of 4th semester & 50 students of 3rd semester every year. Post Graduation Programme has been started since 2003 with annual intake of one PG student, after approval by the Medical Council of India.

The department has also been extending medicolegal training to the interns during their compulsory Rotatory internship.

 A study for the thesis to MD Forensic Medicine title " A profile of poisioning cases coming to GMCH, Chandigarh" in collaboration with Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Sector 36, Chandigarh is being coducted.
