  1. Anaesthesiology is one of the youngest specialities of medicine now diversified in to newer branches like Intensive Care, Pain Relief and Emergency Medical Management.

  2. An Anaesthesiologist(Anaesthetist) is a medical doctor who is a postgraduate in this field as in other specialities in the  hospital. Consultant Anaesthesiologists are assisted by Senior Residents, Postgraduates, Junior Residents, Anaesthesia Assistants (Technicians) and recovery room nurses. Well-trained staff and availability of 'State of the art' technology makes this one of the safest places to get an anaesthetic.

SAFETY AND TECHNOLOGY

Features

  1. 'State of the Art' Anaesthetic machines and automatic record keeping in all machines in Block 'C'. One of these is available in every operation theatre. These monitors let us use extremely low fresh gas flows resulting in extreme economy and negligible theatre pollution. They allow us to know the exact amount of anaesthetic being administred and its clinical effects.

  2. Anaesthetic gas monitors these monitors continuoulsy display the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and other anaesthetic agents being administered.

  3. Anaesthetic Depth Monitor  (BIS) one of these is available in every operation theatre in Block 'C'. These monitos let us know the depth of anaesthesia, thus minimizing the chances of awareness or overdosage during anaesthesia

  4. Newer drugs for predictable anaesthetic responses are available like Fentanyl, Sevoflurane, Propofol, Newer muscle relaxants etc.

  5. Multiparameter vital sign monitors with each anaesthesia machine for continuous monitoring of

  • Electrocardiogram

  • Blood Pressure (Invasive & non-invasive)

  • Oxygen saturation & End tidal carbondioxide

  • Temperature

  • Airway pressures

  • Neuromuscular function monitoring

6. Intensive Care Unit

  1. Advance ICU Ventilators for respiratory support of critically ill patients in 10 bedded state of the art Intensive Care Unit in Block 'C' and 4 bedded ICU in Block 'A'.

  2. Multiparameter vital sign monitor with facility for continuous monitoring of invasive/non invasive blood pressures, ECG, ST segment and arrhythmia analysis, arterial oxygen saturation, end tidal carbob dioxide (ETCO2), EEG, cardiac output & NMT etc.

  3. Central station monitoring for all the vital sign parameters.

  4. Availability of essentially required other equipment including i.e. Syringe pumps, infusion pumps, Blood gas and electrolyte machine, intubating laryngoscope, bronchoscope and spirometry alongwith other disposable items.

  5. Seven Biphasic Defibrillator/pacemaker available in Operation Theatres and Intensive Care Unit.

8. Networking

All the anesthesia machines, recovery room beds and intensive care beds in Block 'C' are networked with a provision to view all patients at central web viewing station at level V Block-D and with a dial up  PC anywhere software  facility at Desktop/ a Laptop.

9. The Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care

Is providing anaesthesia services for 15 Surgical Operation Theatres (08 in Block 'A' and 07 in Block 'C') fourteen bedded (04 in Block 'A' and 10 in Block 'C') Intensive Care Unit and 10 Bedded postoperative recovery room in Block 'C'.

SERVICESServices

The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care is providing perioperative care in preanaesthesia, postanaesthesia rooms, Operation Theatres and post operative wards at Level II and III in Blocks A & C. These operation theatres have central supply of medical gases, vacuum, central air-conditioning and are equipped with latest technology networked anaesthesia work stations and surgical equipment. The Department is running ‘State of the Art’ 10 bedded Intensive Care Unit in Block C and 4 bedded ICU in Block ‘A’ which is equipped with latest equipment and has provided exemplary care to critically ill patients of trauma, poisoning, sepsis, cardio respiratory insufficiency and multi organ dysfunction syndrome. Starting from August, 2009, the department of Anaesthesia has also introduced acute pain service for management of postoperative pain and Pain Management Centre for management of chronic pain. Labour Analgesia Services were introduced in the year 2009 in GMCH-32, Chandigarh.

RESEARCH & TRAINING

Research & Training The Department is providing teaching and training to undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (MD, DNB) students in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care. From the last academic session, starting August 2009, department of Anaesthesia has started B.Sc. in Anaesthesia and Operation Theatre Techniques with an annual intake of 16 students per year. From the current academic session (2010) the department has also started Pre Hospital Trauma Technician Course (9 months duration) with an annual intake of maximum 20 students per year. A skill lab has been started where various categories of hospital staff including doctors, nurses and paramedical staff are being trained in Basic and Advanced life support and airway management. The department is also imparting training to the staff nurses for management of patients in High Dependency Unit. Doctors from outside GMCH have been visiting the institute for Observership in Pain Management. The department has published large number of scientific research papers in international & national journal of repute.  The faculty has actively participated at international/national/state level/conferences/workshops and delivered guest lectures/presented the said research work.
